State, nation, other: Puerto Rico tries to decide - Respond by Wed. Nov. 10!

Oh, no....not politics!! YES, we are going to go there this time. This issue in Puerto Rico has still not been resolved and guess what...all of YOU will most likely be making this decision in the future!

Read this article from the PR Daily Sun and respond by answering some of these questions. You MUST refer to the article in your comment so that we all know that you have read it! For example... "I thought it was crazy how the political candidate from Idaho thought Puerto Rico was a COUNTRY, and didn't even care!!!" or "I know what they mean about the passport question, people asked me that when I went to the states..."

  • Have you had a similar experience to Dayra Rivera's? If so, exlain...
  • What do you think about other peoples' knowledge (or lack thereof) of Puerto Rico?
  • Does Puerto Rico's political status confuse you? How? What about the social status? Is PR more American or more Puerto Rican? Explain...
  • The BIG question: What do you think PR should do...become a state, become independent, stay the same, other?? Explain...
  • Show this article to your parents or other family members. What do they think?
  • Any other reactions, thoughts, questions, opinions that you have to this issue...
You should also start responding to your classmates' comments. Remember, this is a DISCUSSION with the whole class, not just with yourself. For example, "I really agree with ______ because _____." Or "I see the point that _____ is making, but I disagree because ________." As always, BE RESPECTFUL!!

  4. One time I had a situation, but not so similar as Dayra Rivera. I wanted to order some shoes online. I loved those shoes, so I decided to order them. I was very happy because I almost complete my shipping address. The bad news came, Puerto Rico wasn't on the list. I was so mad about it. They did wrong about not giving Dayra her iPhone's case, because they promised the case and if they promised it they have to give her one. I think other people don't care much about Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico's political party confuse me, because we are U.S. citizens and we don't get the same rights and privileges as the people of the U.S.

I think Puerto Rico will be better if becoming a state, but we will face the same problems. Like Primo Delgado said: "it would face the same issues and shipping would still be a problem". Also United States would establish English as our first language and many things of our culture would be loss. So I think we should stay the same way.

  5. The same happend to me with what hector said. I had another experince in the state when i was in florida with my family we were in vaccation and we wnt to a restaurant to eat some dinner we were starving the lady that recived the people was in the door we asked her if he cuold get us a table for 4 persons she looked at us very bad. She escorted us to our table when we got there she seat us at the back of the room were nobody could see us i felt so bad becuase she did it firts becuase we were latinos and second becuse the did not like the way we dressed. My mom was so mad that at the end she show her the way felt and thank her for the horrible service she gave to us.

I think in part we should be a state to not be so racist with us, becuase is they like it our not we are part of the US and citizen. In the other part we should stay the way we are becuse then we forget about uor culture and our languge and it would not be fair. This is my opinion.

  6. I have not had an experience like the one Dayra Rivera had with the I pone’s cases, or like Hector at the internet but I have had a lot of friends talk to me about similar experiences were they are treated unfairly for being Puerto Rican. I had never worried about our political status until now where I am starting to see all the problems that the uncertainty of our status brings.
Yes, I get confuse with our status since even though I know we are affiliated with the US while being a free country, I don’t know how our rights as American citizens are affected or are different from those living in the states do our current status. I do not think we should change of status since most of us are ok were we are now and as a Puerto Rican and American citizen I do not think that most people living in the island are going to be supportive of the new regulations that would come when becoming a state. What I do support is to define our rights as Americans and Puerto Rican to prevent all the confusions. As for those who are ignorant when referring to this subject they should not comment on it, since they do not care why talk.

  7. well yes... i have something that is not like the dayra experience but it is a descrimination from the u.s. one day i was going to get on a contest to win a t-shirt and when the computer ask me for my couintry, i put puerto rico and the computer tell me that i could'nt enter beause puerto rico wasn't a country or anything about U.S. i was very furious because P.R is very friendly with U.S and i was feeling like " taking me appart". Puerto Rico status is very con fusing. I don't know i f we are a country or a part of U.S. In my opinion we are more U.S than puerto ricans because we have all most everithing from thier. Fast food frenchise, companys and medical help. Puerto ricans shoul stay the same becuse if we get the independence we would not get help from U.S and if we become a country of the united states we have to talk their language and to be more dependent. Puerto Rico is having a bad economy in this last years, we need helped but we don't want to be command by anyone so my opinion is to stay as we are now. same....

  8. I had a similiar situtation to Dayra's. When I bought my laptop, I went to BestBuy asking for a special offer that I saw on their internet site, and they told me it didn't applied to Puerto Rico. I was kind of confussed, but then my father said " Maybe It's because we're not a STATE"... Since then Puerto Rico's political status has become a curiosity on me.

As time passes puertoricans are becoming more and more "Americanized", which is not bad, but I fear that we will lose our traditions. I really don't care if Puerto Rico becomes a state or not, because we still get help from the U.S.

I'm not shocked that some people don't know what's Puerto Rico, because even the ones who live here don't really know our commonwealth status. I doubt that in 2011 people vote for statehood, this would be a drastic change and I think we're not ready for such a big move!

  9. I’ve had situations like the one Hector has had when I’ve wanted to order something off the internet, but Puerto Rico was not listed as a country, or some special offer was not applied to Puerto Rico. I also agree when he says that we are U.S citizens, but are not granted the same rights and privileges as them, which we should.
I think that we should become a state in order to have the same rights and privileges, but at the same time, it would not solve all problems, and becoming a state would not necessarily benefit us, since a vast majority of Puerto Ricans can’t speak English, and our culture would be lost over time.

  10. had a similar situation, try to apply for a contest but when I put my address and was looking for Puerto Rico it didnt appear. I think we should be treated the same waay they are treated because it isnt fair but im not saying in becoming a sate because we would lose our culture and it feels good when they call us boricuas or puertorique~os. our language is spanish not english but it dosent matter we should be treated the same

  11. I had a similar situation to Dayra's, well, it happened to my mom. Two months ago my mom bought some shoes on eBay. She make all the procedure, but like Hector's situation, the bad news came. The guy who was selling the shoes was from Philadelphia, and he tell my mom that he wasn't gonna send the shoes because he "specified" that it was for U.S. only. My mom got mad because she even paid for them, and he called her some horrible names about her nationality.

I can't judge a whole country just because one person, but I think that Americans think that they are "superior". It is unfair what is happening to Puerto Rico, because when they need to send soldiers to their stupid battles, they call soldiers from Puerto Rico, and they go out there to defend their "country's pride". They send our people to their death. When they need something from us, they consider us "a state", but when is about giving back, they throw us away like trash. Idaho's political candidate's comment was very disrespectful, not because he called us a country, but he was wrong when he expressed that he did not care. We, and the other Latin Americans, work for them, we make their buildings, their roads, and what do we get? They insult us.

In my opinion, we should stay as a nation (and I say "stay" because I had always considered Puerto Rico as a nation), because if we became a state, we're gonna be the 51th. We're not gonna be priority, their just gonna treat us unfairly. They clearly do not care about us, so why should we care about them? Why do we have to work for them? Why do we have to send our soldiers to death for them? We can be a small island, but we have our dignity. I think we can survive by ourselves, we just have to believe in that. We have tourism, and a lot of land for farming, we can be an independent land. Throughout history, Puerto Ricans are portrayed as strong, and hard working people. If we become a state, we will be just like Hawaii, we will lose our culture and will still be treated unfairly. Even though we will lose a lot of "privileges", we can still be represented as a country in major events like the Olympics and beauty peagants. We do not need their charity, or their leftovers, so they (the U.S. government) can go to another dog with that bone, because we're not going to fall for it.

  12. I've had similar situtions when it comes to ordering items online. I try to order things online but cant because Puerto Rico wasnt on the list. I dont understand why we dont get the same benefits as people that live in the U.S if puertoricans are also U.S citizens. I found it to be very offense the comment that the political candiate from Idaho said about not caring what Puerto Rico is and how it doesnt matter. Puerto Rico should be treated with the same respect as do any other country. I do believe that Puerto Rico should stay the same. I agree with Paulette, that we are not ready to be a state because many puertoricans dont even speak english. We would also with time lose our language and unique culture.

  13. WELL IN MY OPINION THE CURRENT SITUATION OF PUERTORICO SHOULD BE ANALYSED REALL WELL BECAUSE WE DEPEND MOSTLY ON USA FOR PROTECTION AND SUPPORT. IF WE BECOME AND INDEPENDENT COUNTRY WE WILL LOSE ALL THIS BENEFITS WICH IT ISINT CONVENIENT TO LOOSE ALL THIS GOVERMENT HELP. BUT IF WE BECOME A STATE YET WELL LOOSE OUR MAIN LANGUAGE AND OUR CULTURE AND AS MANY HAVE SAID WE ARE DIFFERENT TO AMERICANS EVEN BY THE SIMPLIEST THINGSWE NOTICE HOW THEY TREAT US EVEN BY BEING BY THIS SPECIAL OFFERS.THEY AY WERE EQUAL THEN PROVE IT PUERTO RICO SHOULD REMMAIN THE WAY WE ARE UNTIL OUR COUNTRY COULD BE EFFICIENT ENOUGH TO MANTAIN ITSELF :) AND HELP OUR ECONOMY AND PROGREES

  14. I really haven't had a situation like her's but i know people that this has happened to them and they get really mad. I think that the people in the United States need to learn more about Puerto Rico because some people don't even know were Puerto Rico is and Puerto Rico is part of the US history and you can't take it of it.The political status does not confuse me and i think that Puerto Rico is in the middle of being more american and puertorican. This is because most of the things that you find in the US you can find it here but Puerto Rico is a very patriotic place and the culture is still ours and it will stay ours even if we do become a state. I think that Puerto Rico should stay how it is because we are still part of the US but we keep everything nice about our puertorican culture and we keep our flag up high instead of having the US flag all the time.

  15. I have never gone through that situation as she did. But i have also heard friends and family that have gone through this experience in which they felt offended from this matter. Puerto Rico is not well known yet, but U.S. citizens should take time to at least learn about our culture and beliefs because we are part of a U.S. territory.Politics are very confusing at times because political at times promise and never achieve what they say. My opinion is that i believe that Puerto Rico will be a state someday and well know more U.S. culture and language. Also i believe if Puerto Rico maintains itself as it is, we will be good because we keep our heritage and culture but still benefit from the United States. Politics is just a mess and well, but we don't depend on it.

  17. I have had a similar situation with ordering on the internet, like what happened to Hector. I think that even though we are part of the United States we are not being treated as equals. Which I consider unfair, because we work just as hard to earn it. Also I don't think they have much interest in Puerto Rico. That's why they don't know much about it. The political status in Puerto Rico is confusing to me, because we are becoming more like the Americans, but we don't get the right to vote for president or as it is shown in this article are treated with the same rights. Still in my opinion Puerto Rico depends on the U.S. for many things so I think it should remain how it is and keep it's alliance to the United States, but never forget it's culture.

  18. i had a similar situation like Dyra RIvera, Hector, Ruben,Natassia, etc. i like to go internet shoping, but there are some stores that dont ship to PR. so in order to get the item i have to put my aunts direction of the US , so the item gets there and then he can send it to PR. it bothers me a lot, because i have to do so much work just for a pair of shoes or something like that. instead of just mailing it to PR.

i think that puerto ricans dont know much about PR, they just know the basics. its status confuses me; because we are part of the US and at the same time were not. for me PR its more of a mix culture, it has puerto rican things but also many american things.

i think PR should become a state, because since were not treated like US citizen being citizens, then we should become a state and gain the same privileges as the US.

i showed this article to a friend and she thinks that it was just bad luck and that she sould find another way or store to buy the case. she also agreed with my opinion about becoming a state.

  19. I had some experiences!!that haven't allowed me to get certain things and I have had to ship it to my uncle's home in US. I think they discriminate us but indirectly...But, they are helpful to us cause they gives up money and support of any kind. I think we can lived better as US citizens just because their economics and their money and life....

  20. I have not had a situation like her, but like Angel says said, people get really mad when this situation occurs. The ignorance of the people is the cause of this comments as the comment made by Vaughn Ward, is stupid the way that they treat us. I was surprised with what happened to Ashley at the restaurant, i cant believe that some people are so ignorant and racist. I think we're fine as we are, because everyone benefits from this. This is confusing but we are Puertoricans and no one can change our culture and language. Even if we became a country some problems remain the same and will not be resolve. So i think that being a country or not we will continue to be Puerto Rico and people who do not know us will continue just as ignorant and racist as they are.

  22. I once had a situation but not similar to Dayra Rivera. It was like my classmate Cristian Virellas and some others. I play basketball and always order accessories and shoes by internet websites. I just get so mad when they don’t have Puerto Rico on the list. That makes me so angry because they are people in the world that do not even know that Puerto Rico exists. When we don’t see Puerto Rico in the lists from things we want to order we get very mad. Puerto Rico political status confuses me a lot. I don’t even know right what we are, if we are a country or something like that. I think Puerto Rico should stay for now like how we are. Many people in Puerto Rico although we live with many American resources that help us a lot in many different ways do not like to be ruled by other people that are not Puerto Rico. I ask my grandpa about this, he told me that he wanted to become a state from the United States. That way it could be much better because he said the U.S. would help us much more but I don’t know I’ll like for now to stay like that. By the way people should start recognizing Puerto Rico more since is a beautiful island with magnificent natural things. I have a lot of faith that things in Puerto Rico with our government being loyal our going to get much more. We would hopefully known world-wide in the future. ☺

  23. I have never experienced something like that of what happende to her but i feel that is just prejidust i feel SOME americans feel superior to us Puerto Rican because of our present state or of our govermental state. I believe Puerto Rico should be a free independent country, i blieve we should follow in the footsteps of great independent leaders like Manuel Zeno Gandia and Pedro Albizu, and to provish as a nation we could enphazise the economy bye promoting tourism and inner tourism.. Puerto Rico libre.. :D
